Lying close to the coastline of the Bay of Bengal on the Eastern Ghats, Vizianagaram is a city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Deriving its name from the princely district of Vizianagaram, the name of the city means 'City of Victory'. Bounded by Vishakhapatnam on the west and south, and the Bay of Bengal on the northwest, the Vizianagaram city, is a popular destination for the wholesale textile market to the neighbouring towns as well.

Steeped by a glorious past, the region is known to be strongly linked with a rich history of Kalinga. The land of the city has also been witness to a war between the French and English. Today the city is adorned with temples, majestic forts, beautiful neighbouring cities and bounty of nature. The major river that flows through the city are Nagavali, Gomukhi, Vegavathi, Chempavathi, Suvarnamukhi, and Gostani.

With an average elevation of 242 feet, Vizianagaram has a tropical climate characterised by high humidity all year round. The summers could be scorching with occasional rainfall. The city is renowned for its famous festival of Sirimanu Utsav that usually takes place in October. The nearest airport is located in Vishakapatnam 62 km away from the city. With budding infrastructural development, the city has still been able to retain its charm that fascinates its visitors.

Vizianagaram Fort and Moti Mahal

Vizianagaram Fort was founded by Vijayarama Raju I. It was built in 1713 AD on the auspicious day of Vijaya Dashmi. The main entrance to this fort was the Victory Arch but the main entrance changed to East Gate. The Victory Arch has a temple of Lord Hanuman on one side and a temple of Goddess Lakshmi on the other. The goddess is popular by another name, which is 'Goddess Kota Shakti'.
