Kaba Aye Pagoda History & Significance

The Kaba Aye Pagoda and Maha Pasana Guha cave were built in 1952 by U Nu, the prime minister of Myanmar. The central stupa of the pagoda is painted gold and topped by hti and stands 36-meters in height.

The stupa is surrounded by a circular shrine consisting of five entrances. The walls of the sanctuary are beautifully decorated with paintings of the Jataka tales on the interiors, while the outer walls are painted in a mixture of gold, red and green, along with gemstones at the stop along the massive arches. In the shrine, there are four images of seated Buddha surrounding a hollow pillar at the centre, which is heavily decorated with murals.

The 6th Buddhist council was held in the great cave, which has a huge meeting hall. There is a large image of the Buddha at one end of the room. The building consists of six supporting pillars and also has six entrances to represent the sixth council, which was held to celebrate Buddha's day of Nirvana. It now serves as a venue for annual Buddhist events, ceremonies and has exam halls for monks appearing for Tripitaka course, which highlights the teachings of the Buddha.

There is a small pond in front of the cave around which are a few small pagodas.
