Sule Pagoda History & Significance

Sule Pagoda or Sule Paya is known as Kyaik Athok Zedi in the Burmese language. The original shrine has a history of over 2500 years and is one of the few temples built when the Buddha lived. From the 15th century onwards, several smaller shrines and structures were added to Sule Pagoda, including the present Stupa, which is about 44 meters high.

Architecture

The central pagoda is built in Mon's style of architecture and is unique, being Octagonal. Unlike other pagodas, it is also tiered, with a gradual tapering ending with hti, an ornamental umbrella-shaped element at the top. It consists of three relics believed to be reincarnations of the Buddha, which are revered by people who visit to offer gold leaves.

Other notable structures within the temple complex include several images of Nat spirits installed in small shrines, and rows of shops circling the pagoda, where astrologers are found.
