Nature Park

As with most other hill stations, the best way to experience Yelagiri is by going on walks criss-crossing the town. Yelagiri, in fact, provides a separate walking trail for tourists, guaranteeing breathtaking views of the entire panorama around the hill station. Known as the Nature Park, the place is spread over 6 acres of land, and is one of the most visited places in town, not just by tourists, but by local residents as well. Including a separate children’s park, a fish aquarium, and an artificial waterfall, the Nature Park is one of the most engaging tourist attractions in Yelagiri.

Punganoor Lake

The entirely man-made Punganoor Lake is another major attraction in Yelagiri. Attracting people of various ages all year round, the lake-cum-park is one of the best places to unwind and relax in the lap of nature. In addition to providing boating services, the park around the lake, with its perfectly manicured pathways is the ideal spot to lie back and spend a lazy evening surrounded by the cool breeze and rocky hills on all sides.

YASA

Yelagiri offers plenty of options for anyone looking for a little bit of a holiday thrill, with the YASA (Yelagiri Association of Adventure Sports) offering trekking, rock-climbing and paragliding activities for those interested. The Swamimalai Hills trek is one of the most popular treks availed by tourists visiting Yelagiri, and with the Swamimalai Hills standing as the highest point of the hill station, the view of the entire valley from the top is jaw-dropping.

Velavan Temple

Yelagiri, as with most Southern cities, has quite a few temples located within its perimeters, the most important one that you need to visit being the Velavan temple. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Velavan temple is located at the very top of the Yelagiri mountains, making a trek up to the temple worth it not just because of the spiritual connection, but also because of the breathtaking views of the entire landscape from the peak.

The pristine and relatively untouched beauty of Yelagiri lies in its orchards, its rose gardens, and its surrounding hills and water bodies. The orchards of Yelagiri are filled with fruits such as mangoes, and jackfruits and the foliage consist of roses, herbs, spices and other plants. The fresh mountain air and nature trails make Yelagiri a favourite among trekking enthusiasts and the town offers activities for rock climbing, paragliding and other adventure sports. Apart from these, the town is also popular for its many parks and waterfalls.

The Yelagiri Summer Festival generally takes place in the month of May each year. Spread over two days, the festival is organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Board and hosts a variety of events. These include the screening of local movies and cultural programmes by professional artists as well as students. Many stalls displaying a range of products like flowers, local goods and other items are set up. The festival also holds a popular dog show and has a boathouse. Tourists from many different states come to Yelagiri during this period to be a part of the festivities.

Day 1 - Reach Yelagiri by noon. After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the Nature Park. In the evening, visit the Velavan Temple.
Day 2 - Visit the Punganoor Lake Park for boating . Then, visit the Jalagambarai Waterfalls. After lunch, check out the Government Herbal Farm and then the Telescope Observatory.
Day 3 - After breakfast , go trekking in the Swamimalai Hills. Avoid this activity during the monsoons. Those interested in para - gliding can sign up for sessions which are held throughout the year.

As a hill station, the town has cold, pleasant temperatures throughout the year. Yelagiri is also somewhat of a respite from the hot, sometimes unbearable temperatures of most of the cities in the south. Owing to its latitude, it never really gets too hot. The winters aren't very chilly either. So going to Yelagiri at anytime is just as much fun. Although, the summers might seem to be a good time to visit Yelagiri, the winter months of November to February are ideal for witnessing the true colours of the hill station and all that it has to offer, but if you want to see its Summer Festival, then May and June is the time to go.
