City Walls, Zadar Overview

Zadar City Walls were initially constructed by the Romans and later on expanded by the rulers of the other dynasties over the centuries. Two of the walls including the St. Nikola fortress and Venetian defensive system have recently been inscribed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites.

These walls were initially built in the 16th century to protect the city from the invasion and frequent attacks by Ottoman Turkey and were an important part of their defense system. Today only some portions of the wall and four gates remain, including the Land gate, sea gate, bridge gate and St. Rocco gate . Land gate on Fosa harbor is the most attractive one, it's the main historical entrance of the city built in 1543 and is known as the finest Renaissance monument. The other is the sea gate which is adorned by the relief of St. Mark's lion and St Rocco are the smallest connecting three wall squares with the harbor.
