A great array of artifacts on display, brief medieval and Pre-roman collections and a showcase of the rich archaeological heritage of the region, Archaeological museum of Zadar covers a wide historical timeframe. It is the second oldest museum in Croatia and houses about 100,000 artifacts of different types, it displays archaeological material from metal ages, Roman Illyrians and Byzantine periods as well as archaeological remains from the 7th century onwards.
The museum is housed in a historic building of the 19th century, St. Mary. The architecture of this museum has elements from Gothic and Renaissance styles. The archaeological museum has both temporary and permanent exhibitions and has a lecture hall, conservation workshop and a library .
