The Zagreb Funicular is not only the ‘particularly-fun ride’ in Zagreb, but it is also the oldest and shortest funicular ride on the planet. At a length of 66 metres, it connects the Lower town (Donji Grad) to the Upper town (Gornji Grad). It looks the same as when it started 120 years back.
The symbol of Zagreb, this Funicular which started around the late 19th century is also the safest, and ever since these cute boxes started functioning, they have been in an accident. It is now a protected cultural monument of Zagreb since its appearance has been kept intact for over 120 years!
Initially, the funicular rode on steam engines but was replaced in 1934 with electrical engines. It is locally known as ‘Zapinjaca’ (stucker) as at times the wagons literally get stuck and need to be moved by the passengers.
Other important objective information : 1. The Funicular has a seating capacity of 28, 16 sitting and 12 standing positions.
2. The Funicular tickets are also valid ZET Tram or bus tickets.
