A bustling epicenter below Kaptol and Gradec, Ban Jelacic Square is the main downtown square in Zagreb. Other than being a local gathering spot, you will also encounter many people playing music, selling their products and witnessing the hosted fairs and performance on the square.
The liveliness can be felt in front of the various cafes and restaurants which line up the street, from great coffee shops to convenience stores, it's a hub of activity in the old town. This is also a focal area for the Christmas market. Various events are hosted here like the Tiangno marching band, New Year's Eve, sports events and much more. It's well connected with tram lines as well.
It's an elegant square to feel the city's pulse and indulge yourself in daily meetups, everyday gossip and chatting with the locals under the sculpture of Ban Josip. This square initially carried its name as Harmica which was changed in 1848 to honor the Ban (Governor) Josip Jelacic.
