Zagreb Funicular, Zagreb Overview

The Zagreb Funicular, established in 1890, is the shortest public-transport funicular in the world, connecting the Lower Town (Donji Grad) to the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) in just 64 seconds. Located on Tomićeva Street, near Ban Jelačić Square, it covers a 66-meter track, offering scenic views of Zagreb's historic core. This iconic funicular has been in continuous operation for over a century and remains a popular, practical, and charming way to access the city's Upper Town.

The symbol of Zagreb, this Funicular which started around the late 19th century is also the safest, and ever since these cute boxes started functioning, they have been in an accident. It is now a protected cultural monument of Zagreb since its appearance has been kept intact for over 120 years!

Initially, the funicular rode on steam engines but was replaced in 1934 with electrical engines. It is locally known as ‘Zapinjaca’ (stucker) as at times the wagons literally get stuck and need to be moved by the passengers.
