Anafonitria monastery, Zakynthos Overview

Anafonitria Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is a 15th-century Byzantine monastery located in the island's northwest region. The historical building holds great religious significance as this is where the island’s Guardian Saint, Agios Dionysios, became a monk and spent the rest of his life. The church inside is adorned with an icon of the Virgin Mary and recently discovered murals dating back over 500 years.

The monastery complex comprises several cobblestone buildings, pillars, and a square-shaped defensive tower. It also includes the main basilica, gardens, complexes, a small souvenir shop, and a taverna. Visitors can see a few donkeys before the expansive courtyard to enter the monastery through the entrance arch. The monastery is one of the few ancient monuments to survive the 1953 earthquake. The popular beaches of Porto Vromi and Navagio are a few kilometres from the monastery.
