Gerakas Beach in Zakynthos, famous for its natural beauty, is located near Vasilikos town on the end of the island's southern peninsula. The coved beach is surrounded by rock formations and has a small cape-like headland made of mud clay with therapeutic properties. It is a designated nesting territory for Loggerhead turtles. You can travel down a wooden ramp and enjoy swimming or sunbathing at one of the designated spots for tourists. The clay ridge once used for clay therapy is now inaccessible due to its instability.
The beach falls under the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, due to which some sections of the beach are restricted to protect turtle eggs. The mesmerising turquoise waters make for a great snorkelling session, where one can spot a few turtles and stingrays. Zakynthos Turtle Rescue Centre, Vasilikos Beach, and St Nicholas Beach are the nearest attractions. Several beach bars and taverns are within walking distance of Gerakas.
