The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is situated within the Laganas Bay area on the island's southern coast. Some famous loggerhead turtle nesting beaches, such as Gerakas, Sekania, Laganas, Limni Keri, Kalamaki, and Cameo, fall under the park. The Marine park has the most famous underwater diving and snorkelling spots on the island, where one can swim in the enchanting turquoise waters amongst rare marine animals such as sea urchins, seals, turtles, fishes, crustaceans and vibrant coral reefs.
Bird Watching and water sports such as paddle boating and kayaking are popular activities on these sandy beaches. The Marine park is the first of its kind, founded in 1999. The aim of the Marine park is the conservation of endangered species of Marine flora and fauna. It is home to the endangered species of the Caretta Caretta turtles, popularly known as Loggerhead turtles. Visit the exhibition centre in the Dafne region for its informative multimedia displays and eco-tour.
