Rajim, Chhattisgarh Overview

Rajim is considered the perfect place to witness Chhattisgarh’s rich cultural heritage. Also known as the ‘Prayag’ of Chhattisgarh, Rajim is the spot of the union of three holy rivers - Mahanadi (Chitrotpala), Pairi and Sondur. This point of meeting of these three rivers is also referred to as the ‘Triveni Sangam’. The Chhattisgarh Kumbh Mela takes place over here from Magh Poornima to Mahashivaratri every year. Pilgrims come together from several places across the country to take part in this auspicious event. The town is also home to various historical monuments that attract prominent historians.

How to Reach Rajim

Rajim is a small town that is at a distance of 45 km from Raipur. It is well connected by road and rail. The nearest airport is the Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur. The nearest railhead to Rajim is the Mahasamund railway station. There are several buses available from most parts of Chhattisgarh to Rajim.

Rajim is famous for its various temples and historical monuments. It is home to the Rajiv Lochan Temple, the Rajesvar Temple, Ramachandra Temple, Daneshwar Temple, Jagannath Temple, Kuleshwar Temple, and Champaram among others.

Rajiv Lochan Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is regarded as the main attraction of Rajim. Believed to have been constructed in the 7th century, it is attributed to belonging to a branch of the Nala dynasty. This temple is regarded as a notable example of Panchayana Shaili. It is lauded for its beautiful architecture and is visited by devotees from all over the globe. The main temple structure is supported by twelve towered columns that bear intricate stone carvings of Gods of Hindu mythology on them. Another popular feature of this temple is the statue of Lord Buddha that is in a meditative position under the Bodhi Tree. The statue is carved entirely out of black stone.

The Rajesvar Temple is located opposite to the western entrance of the Rajiv Lochan Temple. It comprises of a mandapa, antarala and garba-griha. Its architectural style is regarded to be similar to the Rajiv Lochan temple.

Chhattisgarh Kumbh Mela

The Chhattisgarh Kumbh mela is held from mid-February to March every year, spanning throughout 15 days. This holy event attracts scores of Sadhus, Sants, Mahatmas, Rishis, and Munis from India and abroad. The Rajiv Lochan Mahotsav is an event that is held during the Kumbh Mela festival at Rajim. There is unique music, and dance performances held to display the culture of Chhattisgarh.
