From the monastery, your tour will continue to Arachova and on through the majestic mountains and fertile valleys to Delphi. You'll visit the ancient city of Delphi and the Temple of Apollo, home to the Oracle of Delphi. Delphi was inhabited since Mycenaean times and the worship of Apollo was established between the 11th and 9th century B.C. In the 8th century B.C. Delphi became internationally known for the Oracular powers of Pythia, the high priestess, who sat on a tripod, inhaled ethylene gasses, and muttered incomprehensible words that foretold the future. The ancient people of the Mediterranean had such faith in Pythia’s view of the future, that no major decision was made without consulting the Oracle of Delphi first. In ancient Delphi, you will also see the Stadium of Delphi, built around the 4th century B.C. and visit the Delphi Archeological Museum. Finally, your driver/guide will take you to the modern village of Delphi where you'll have time to purchase lunch at a scenic traditional tavern before the return drive back to Athens.
