Founded in the year 1979, Lawndale Art Center in Houston started out as a studio space for graduate students to paint, sculpt or practise their art, and is today a non-profit organisation featuring contemporary art by local artists. Situated within a 1930s Art Deco building, the museum puts on display exhibits by hundreds of artists every year and also hosts informal talks, special events and benefits.

The Menil Collection in Neartown Houston is both a private art collection as well as the museum itself that houses thousands of paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, photographs, rare books and more.
