Ok great location but probably wont stay again due to the uncomfy beds
The location was spot on
The beds were really uncomfortable and we both came away with a sore backs. The floor boards creaked so loud.

Overall, it was adequate for a 1 night stay and very reasonably priced for a city centre hotel.
The bed was comfortable and the building is lovely. The staircase / landings are impressive architecturally. Overall, it was adequate for a 1 night stay but I was disappointed insofar as this is a beautiful building, that with decorative refurbishment in a classic style could be fabulous. We didn't have breakfast (opting for a lie in and late checkout instead) so can't comment on that. It suited us for a place to sleep for the night which is all we needed on this occasion.
It is very dated. The furnishings of the areas of the hotel we witnessed are tired and in need of refurbishment i.e. the main areas walking in and up to the rooms. The carpets on the main staircase are becoming threadbare on the edges. The photographer had done an excellent job making it look great on the website but sadly, the camera lies. The room was in general good condition and the bathroom had been updated with modern tiles and good quality sanitaryware i.e. Villeroy & Boch with a good, well lit mirror which didn't mist up. The glass shower screen was ill fitting thereby causing a leak down the bath panel causing damage - an easy fix, just hasn't been done. There was no hook on the bathroom door which would be useful (holes where there had been one previously). There was a random, modern ball of wool frieze on the wall above the bed which just doesn't fit with the general decor and feel of the hotel. The wheelchair access ramps at the main entrance looked very shabby and "DIY" - not a good first impression and the lift was out of service (I don't know how long this had been the case and may have only been for that day). Our immediate neighbours were noisy but this was to be expected given that it was NYE but I would say the walls are thin as one could hear normal level talking noise too. Our view to the rear of the hotel wasn't pleasant but didn't affect our stay for 1 night. Drake's bar was again very dated and looked cheap; we had a quick drink as we had 20 mins to spare before we headed out for the evening. The barman was pleasant but there was absolutely no atmosphere which was quite odd given that it was NYE. There was no reason to stay for another; it felt like a waiting room. I wouldn't choose this hotel for an important occasion but if you're only in town for a day or 2, it's perfectly fine. If you like a bit of luxury I'm afraid I would suggest you stay elsewhere.

Passable
brilliant location, looks great but a let down
location was brilliant in the centre of town walking distance of where I was entertaining customers for the evening
the floor in the room I was in was very noisy and made a loud creeking noise every time you walked across it. the breakfast was aweful, I went to breakfast about 8:45 and there was 2 tables of 4 (families) and 2 single people when I arrived. I went to the hot food counter, there wasnt any fried eggs, the tomatoes looked like they had ben there since 6am all shrivled up, the beans were dry where they had been sat there under the hot lamp for hours a couple bits fried toast all dry and crispy, and the scrambled egg was all crumbly again dry. Really disappointing, ended up buying breakfast elsewhere.

Great hotel let down by the room decor
Wonderful old grand hotel in the heart of Exeter
The rooms have been given a 'modern' makeover which makes them feel at odds with the rest of the hotel. Cracks in wall had been filled but not repainted. Disappointing as the public areas if the hotel were lovely.

Ideal location opposite the station and easy into town for shopping and then evening. We also liked the retro feel of the hotel and the bar was ideal for a nightcap
Can't think there was anything...

All the staff. Without exception, they work with pride and care for their guests. Superb, central location.
Breakfast was OK - just. Cooked breakfast was not very hot, average ingredients, poor coffee machine.
