Algiers, the capital and largest city of Algeria, is a beautiful port city along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. With white buildings sporting classic Mediterranean architecture that slope up the hill from the shore, Alfiers boasts of one of the most scenic cityscapes across all of North Africa. You can find a beautiful blend of modern architecture with regal Byzantine structures and French influences spread across the city.
The old quarter of the city of Algiers is contained within the Citadel, or Kasbah, located on top of the hill that overlooks the modern city and the Mediterranean Sea. A UNESCO World Cultural Site, the ancient city slopes down the hill, thus divided into the high city and low city. Algiers is home to many beautiful and elaborately designed mosques, constructed in the classic Byzantine architectural style. However, one of the most iconic landmarks of the city is the Notre Dame d'Afrique, a massive Catholic basilica situated atop a cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers. The scenic coast of the city is best enjoyed from the seaside boulevard. Algiers is a city steeped in a long and turbulent history, with a grand mix of various heritages, and this is reflected in its people and the vibe of the city. Despite its painful past and current problems, it continues to be one of the cities of North Africa with a higher quality of living, as well as one of the jewels of the Mediterranean area.
