St. Patrick's Cathedral Auckland

The St. Patrick’s Cathedral is an important part of New Zealand’s heritage. It is one of the most important buildings constructed by the Catholic church in Auckland and New Zealand. It was designed by Edward Mahoney. Mahoney and sons were influential architects and the building is a fine example for neo-gothic architecture in colonial New Zealand. St Patrick’s Cathedral has occupied its site since 1842. A prominent landmark of early Christchurch, it remains so even today. It is the centre of the Catholic community in the city.

Before the work began for the construction of a permanent church, the Catholic church opened a wooden chapel, a clergy house, and a school room. In 1845, an Australian architect named Walter Robinson arrived in Auckland to start working on the design for a stone church. In 1895, it was rebuilt by another architect called Edward Mahoney. Some of the changes to St Patrick's Cathedral are, a new slate tile roof, new foundations and restored north lawn, Earthquake strengthened walls New baptismal font, New pulpit near the sanctuary, repaired stained glass windows, strengthened bell tower.

The high ceilings give one a sense of time when the church was built. Six huge tombs were built under the church for Catholic bishops.
