Prior Park Landscape Garden, Bath Overview

The Prior Park Landscape Garden, a former deer park turned agricultural farm is now a tourist attraction. Located on the Ralph Allen drive, south Bath, the park is at a convenient distance from the city centre. It houses some of Europe’s long lost Palladian architectural styles and ancient English ruins, gravitating history and nature lovers towards it. Adding to the heritage value of the ancient city of Bath, the park is more of a monument than a park.

  • The Prior Park Landscape Garden not only shelters a variety of wildlife it overflows with wild garlic as well! Locals are invited to handpick their wild garlic!
  • There is a display of activities for tourists of all age groups, including a Musical Playground, an arena to celebrate nature's music and grow with it.

  • There are eateries such as Tea Shed, where you can relish tea and cake.
  • There is a garden shopping area as well.
  • The park hosts “Guided Walks” a 90-minute informative tour through the park twice a week; every Tuesday and Thursday, from 11:30 AM.

History of the Park

  • The Ice House was initially set up for ice storage which further turned into a German arsenal during World War II.
  • The Summer House, when found, was just a frame of a rugged farmhouse, which was eventually converted into a livable shelter for resting purposes.
  • Another eye-catching feature of the place is the Palladian (a European architectural style)Bridge, reconstructed after war ruins.
  • Mrs Allen’s Grotto is an ancient villa-like structure embellished with abundant mineral, stones and bones. It was set up by Alexander Pope for Mrs Allen.
  • Although Alexander Pope is one of the corner-stones, the Prior Park Landscape Garden sees its glory today as a result of the efforts of Ralph Allen, Capability Brown and many other pioneers. 

Architecture of Prior Park

  • The park preserves some of the endangered styles of European architecture, such as the Palladian Bridge, the last of its kind to be built and treasured in England.
  • Some of the ancient remains found here are the Ice House, Summer House, Mrs Allen’s Grotto, Gothic temple, the Palladian Bridge, Sham Bridge
  • The park is from the 18th century, and hence one may notice ample gothic architectures and designs rich in history and intricacy.

How To Reach Prior Park Landscape Garden

On foot:
Begin your journey from the back of the city railway station, which would be an uphill walk of about a mile or so. You would reach the Avon river at the end of it walk, cross it and walk past the Widcombe Shopping Parade. Continue your walk until you hit a right turn onto Prior Park Road at the White Hart Pub, take that turn and walk uphill. Watch out for the garden which would be on your left as you continue walking uphill.  

By Road:


Car
You could drive down to the Prior Park Landscape Garden but bear in mind that there would be no parking at the garden. Parking is provided only for disabled visitors. Parking space to the general public and tourists can be availed at the Bath City Center.

Bus
You would find an abundance of buses from the City Center. Take bus number two from the BK stop on Dorchester Street, which would arrive at the stop every half hour all through the week. Get off at the Prior Park Landscape Garden stop, which would be right in front of the garden.

You could also take a different bus route. Take the Red City Sightseeing Bus from either Manvers St or Terrace Walk or North Parade or Great Pulteney St and get off at stop Q.
