The church of Saint Francis of Assisi is located in the Pampulha region and is designed in an organic modern style by Oscar Niemeyer.
Situated in the Pampulha suburb, the church is the first listed modern monument in the country. One of Oscar's earliest works, the design of this church gives a foresight into the monuments that were to spawn in the future from this architect's brain. The church in the shape of a parabola with outdoor mosaics of Ajulejo tiles by Candido Portinari became the subject of controversy in the Christian community because of its modern design. Though it was finished decades ago, the church was consecrated in 1959 as it combined a spiritual atmosphere with unique architecture. The church became a UNESCO World Heritage in July 2016.
