Sachsenhausen, Berlin Overview

Sachsenhausen, a then-Nazi concentration camp, is located in Oranienburg in Germany. Visitors can see the preserved barracks, gas chambers, execution sites, museum, and archives containing historical documents and personal accounts of horrifying atrocities committed.

It is a sobering and horrifying reminder of the atrocities committed.Sachsenhausen was one of the first of many upcoming concentration camps established in 1933. Initially these camps were used to jail and squash political opponents of the Nazi regime, such as communists and trade or anyone and everyone who seemed to not agree with them. It became a prime example for other concentration camps and was used for unauthorized medical experiments, forced labor, and mass execution. Prisoners were subjected to varying levels of torture and brutal conditions including starvation, disease, and excruciating conditions. Despite several hardships, many prisoners found ways to protest and support other inmates, creating hidden underground organizations and even staging a revolt in 1945. Today, Sachsenhausen serves as a memorial and educational site, reminding us of the dangers of totalitarianism, our horrifying past, and the importance of human rights.
