The Archaeological Museum of Chania is situated in the historic suburb of Chalepa, a significant district in Chania. Nestled on a plot of land covering 12 acres, the museum's iconic building offers a panoramic view of the city and the seafront. This museum is renowned for its extensive collection of ancient artifacts, spanning various periods of history in the Chania region.
Visitors can explore three main halls on the ground floor and one on the first floor, each showcasing archaeological treasures retrieved from Chania and surrounding regions, over time. The exhibition is set out in three galleries. The first one is about the prehistoric settlement of Minoan life, and the second is about the establishment of Kydonia, Aptera and the League of cities in the 3rd B.C. The last hall displays everyday life, from the earthquakes and reconstructions in the city to the lifestyle of people in Crete. There is also a gallery on the topmost floor of the museum, which exhibits ancient objects from Konstantinos, Marika and Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
One of the museum's main attractions is its permanent exhibition, which features over 4,100 pieces arranged in three large halls on the ground floor. To reach the Archaeological Museum of Chania from the city center, visitors can follow the road to the historic district of Chalepa. Walk along the seaside footpath towards Chalepa for about 2.5 km. It takes about 30 minutes to reach.
