Etz Hayyim Synagogue

Etz Hayyim Synagogue, situated in the heart of Chania's Old Town, stands as Crete's sole surviving synagogue, dating back to the 15th century. Its serene courtyards, including the Ronald Lauder Garden and a pebble-paved garden, offer a serene escape. Accessible via a small lane off Kondylaki Street, synagogue is both a place of worship and a cultural center.

Visitors can explore its hallowed halls, adorned with commemorative scrolls, religious artifacts, and a remarkable collection of fabrics. Additionally, the synagogue hosts a range of cultural events, including exhibitions, lectures, readings, films, and concerts, fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse communities. Despite enduring severe damage during World War II, it was resurrected in 1999, serving as a poignant testament to the enduring legacy of Crete's Jewish community. This historic landmark represents over 2,000 years of Jewish presence in Chania, shaped by a rich tapestry of Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman influences.
