The Firka Fortress is situated at the western tip of Chania's harbor. Today, it houses the Maritime Museum of Crete and is close to the waterfront. It is known for its well-preserved ramparts, barracks, and prison cells, and the views of the old town and Venetian port are fantastic from here. It is free to visit and close to the old port.
You will find a courtyard, a dome-shaped water tank and arched openings used as prison cells or to hide cannons in the fortress. Constructed by the Venetians in the 17th century, Firka served as a defensive bastion against maritime threats. Its strategic location on the waterfront offered protection to the city and its inhabitants. The fort was also the headquarters for the commander-in-chief of the army. The fortress witnessed tumultuous events, including the Turkish invasion of 1645, which saw it repurposed as a barracks and prison.
Situated at the western end of the harbor, it is easily accessible on foot from the city center. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront promenade, enjoying views of the harbor's bustling activity before arriving at the fortress's imposing gates.
