Mohos, Crete Overview

Mochos village is a traditional Greek town, 10km away from the famous Stalis resort in Malia and 40km from Heraklion. The village is known for its olive cultivation and has has cafes, taverns and churches that are manifestations of ancient Greek architecture and style.The village alleys and homes also hold the old-world charm and the picturesque landscape makes Mochos a perfect spot to click pictures.

The road leading from Stalis enters and cuts across the Mochos village offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountain and sea topography. In fact, from the road, Mochos itself looks resplendent tucked away in the mountains. Driving further, one reaches the central square of the village which is a welcoming reminder of authentic Greek culture. The road then continues towards Krasi and the Lassithi Plateau.

Churches are adorned with Byzantine icons of the Virgin Mary, and Archangel Michael and frescos dating back to the 14th century. Mohos is well known for its musical traditions. From May to September, Cretan Evenings are held every Wednesday at the village square. Traditional songs, dances and musical events take place each week attracting locals and tourists. Every year on the 14th and 15th of August there are special celebrations honoring Mother Mary that include Cretan music, dancing, songs, local wine and great food and continue till early in the morning. Also, during this celebration, local artisans showcase their handmade products in an exhibition held in the Folklore Museum of Mohos. There are around 20 plus churches in Mohos and the Monastery of Panagia Theogennitoros outside the village is worth a visit. Mohos provides insight into traditional Greek culture, whether it is through the food, music or hospitality of its local people.
