Located at the junction of Samora Avenue and Maktaba Street in the heart of the city, The Askari Monument in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was built in 1927 to honour African soldiers who served in the British Carrier Corps during World War I. It stands on a roundabout, as a reminder of their contributions to the war effort and is a cherished landmark in the city.
Designed by British sculptor James Alexander Stevenson, the monument features a bronze statue of an Askari soldier holding a rifle, symbolizing their bravery and sacrifice. The monument's design follows a neoclassical style and includes inscriptions honouring the African soldiers and key battle dates from the war. "Askari" means "soldier" in Swahili, emphasizing the significance of the monument. Besides being a symbol of remembrance, the Askari Monument is a popular tourist spot and a meeting place for locals. It hosts ceremonies and gatherings, preserving Tanzania's wartime history for generations to come.
