When traveling from Gangtok to Darjeeling, there are two main road route options to choose from:
Route 1 – Via NH10: This is the most common and popular route, offering scenic views of the Himalayan foothills. The journey covers approximately 100 kilometers and takes about 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions. You'll pass through places like Singtam, Ranipool, and Teesta Bazaar before reaching Darjeeling.
Route 2 – Via Kalimpong: This route takes you through the charming town of Kalimpong before reaching Darjeeling. Covering a distance of approximately 115 kilometers, the journey typically takes around 5-6 hours. After traveling on NH10 till Rangpo, you'll turn right towards Kalimpong. From Kalimpong, you'll continue via Peshok Road to reach Darjeeling.
The most popular route is via National Highway 10, which offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Covering a distance of around 98 kilometers, the journey takes approximately 3 hours by car. This scenic and well-maintained road provides an unforgettable experience amidst the majestic landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas.
2. Gangtok to Darjeeling by Private/Shared Taxi
The most common mode of transportation between Gangtok and Darjeeling is by taxi or shared jeep. Head to the taxi stands or bus stations in Gangtok to find vehicles departing for Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are readily available and offer a budget-friendly option for travelers. Ensure to negotiate the fare beforehand and confirm the departure point and timing.

Hatchback Taxi (WagonR or Similar): Rs. 3000 (Includes 105 Kms), Rs. 12.00 per KM beyond 105 Kms.
Sedan Car (Swift Dzire or Similar): Rs. 3300 (Includes 105 Kms), Rs. 15.00 per KM beyond 105 Kms.
SUV Cab (Innova or Similar): Rs. 4000 (Includes 105 Kms), Rs. 20.00 per KM beyond 105 Kms.
Shared Taxi Fare
Regular shared taxi services operate between Gangtok and Darjeeling from 6 am to 8 am, with another round from 12 pm to 2 pm. However, the frequency decreases after this time. The fare for the shared taxi service is Rs 200 per person and can be availed at the Deorali taxi stand in Gangtok. It's advisable to arrive early to secure a seat as seats may fill up quickly during peak hours.

3. Gangtok to Darjeeling by Train
There is no direct train route from Gangtok to Darjeeling as both cities are located in mountainous regions with no railway connectivity. However, travelers can take a train from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Siliguri to reach Darjeeling. From Gangtok, one can first travel to New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri by road, which takes approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. At New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri, travelers can then board a toy train or hire a taxi or shared jeep to reach Darjeeling. The toy train ride from New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri to Darjeeling offers a scenic and memorable journey through the picturesque hills and valleys of the Eastern Himalayas. It's advisable to check the train schedules and book tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.
