History of the Museum

The museum was established in 1796 as a prison for public hangings and execution. During the famine, from 1845 to 1850, many people deliberately committed crimes to be imprisoned here so that they could get some food. After 1916, the prison was used to incarcerate political prisoners who participated in the Easter Rising. The museum opened in 1966 to the public.
