Paradise Valley Nature Reserve is over 100 hectares of coastal grassland in Pinetown. It is known for the beautiful Umbilo river and hiking trails. It is the ideal location for birdwatching, nature walks and picnics.
Four well-marked nature trails start at the Interpretive Centre and lead through the picnic area. There is an old wooden bridge that can be used to cross the picnic area with the remnants of an old dam wall. Located nearby are some stone steps leading to a clear pool at the bottom of a gorgeous waterfall. Follow the yellow trail markers to take the Duiker path and visit the historical Umbilo Waterworks, which were built in 1887. Wildlife can be spotted at the Nature Valley, including dassies, bushbucks, water mongoose, slender mongoose, otter, and blue duikers. There are also 80 mysterious burial mounds located here whose origin is unknown. Collect trail maps from the reception.
