Ghent City Hall, Ghent Overview

Ghent's City Hall (Stadhuis), located in Botermarkt, is the the administrative heart of Ghent since the 14th century. It is mostly visited for its architectural significance, characterized by intricate stone carvings and ornate detailing. Reception area is the only part of Ghent City hall that can be accessed freely, for more insight and deep exploration, guided tours are the only way to explore.

Inside, the building houses 51 rooms, including the renowned Wedding Chapel, adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows. The interior is a labyrinth of corridors and chambers, each echoing tales from Ghent's storied past. The City Hall's façade along Hoogpoort exemplifies the Flamboyant Late Gothic style from the early 16th century, characterized by intricate stone carvings and ornate detailing. In contrast, the Botermarkt side displays a Renaissance aesthetic, featuring three-quarter Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns inspired by Italian palazzi. This juxtaposition highlights the city's evolving architectural preferences over the centuries.
