Saint Nicholas Church, Ghent Overview

Saint Nicholas' Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk) is a prominent Roman Catholic landmark situated near the Korenmarkt and the old harbor along Gras- and Korenlei. It is primarily visited for for its stunning Scheldt Gothic architecture, historic significance, and role in Ghent’s famous three towers skyline. The free-entry church features beautiful stained-glass windows, a historic organ, and medieval chapels.

Construction of the church began in the early 13th century, replacing an earlier Romanesque structure. Built in the Scheldt Gothic style, it features blue-gray stone from the Tournai area, a central tower above the crossing, and slender turrets at the corners. Over the centuries, Saint Nicholas' Church has undergone extensive renovations, especially in the last 30 years. Notable interior features include a 19th-century organ and two massive stained-glass windows by J.B. Capronnier, also from the mid-19th century.
