Kat Hing Wai Walled Village, Hong Kong Overview

Kat Hing Wai is a walled village situated in the Yuen Long District of Hong Kong which remains inhabited by about 400 descendants of the Tang Clan. They built these walls to protect the civilians from pirates, bandits, rival clans and even wild animals. The most iconic feature of Kat Hing Wai is its structure. One can enter the village by making a HKD 3 donation to the village fund at the front gate.

Stretching over 80 square metres, the Kat Hing Wai Walled Village is surrounded by four seven-metre high brick walls. While most of the original architecture has disappeared, part of the village such as the guardhouse and moats date back to the original civilization. The entrance leads directly to the ancestral shrine and embraces several old stone buildings, some which have been replaced by modern structures.
