Wan Chai Heritage Trail, Hong Kong Overview

Wan Chai Heritage Trail is a walking trail that starts at Mallory Street and ends at Wing Fung Street taking in buildings of historical, cultural and architectural interests. It was formed by Wan Chan Revitalisation Initiatives Special Committee (OWCRISC) on september 27, 2009 to conserve and protect the culture of Wan Chai. At present, the trail features 15 sites and is roughly a 2-hour walk.

The Wan Chai Heritage Trail is divided into two parts- cultural and architectural. Computers have been installed along the route to let the visitors read about the places they visit. The trail is an easy way to experience not only the city’s culture, but also to appreciate its colonial and modern architecture.

Architectural Heritage Trail

Green House: As the name suggests, this is a block of ten tenement houses whose walls are painted in green color located in Mallory street. It is one of the few remaining Tong-Lau of the balcony type in Hong Kong. In 2005, it became the first preservation project of the Urban Renewal Authority. The URA renamed it to 7 Mallory street in 2018.

Ruttonjee Hospital: Located on the Queen’s Road East, Hong Kong Tuberculosis, chest and heart diseases association is a part of the Ruttonjee Hospital known for its Bauhaus Architectural style.

Blue House: Situated on Stone Nullah Lane, Blue House, is a 4-storey balcony type tenement named after blue color painted on its external walls.

Yellow House: Situated on Hing Wan Street, this is known for its yellow painted exterior walls.

The Pawn: Situated on Johnston Road, The Pawn is known for its fine restaurants.

Ovologue: It is located on the Johnston Road.

NO 18 Ship Street: Referred as “Ghost House” by locals, ship street starts from Johnston road and ends at Kennedy Road.

Nam Koo Terrace: Located on Ship Street, Nam Koo Terrace is also known as Wan Chai Haunted House.

Starstreet Precinct: The Starstreet Precinct is a neighbourhood in Wan Chai consisting of Star Street, Moon Street, Sun Street and Wing Fung Street.

Wan Chai Market: Situated on Tai Yuen Street, it is one of the biggest outdoor markets on Hong Kong Island selling a variety of almost everything. Initially, it was a toy market but the sellers now have added almost everything to their collection including fashion, festive decoration, costumes, board games, and even local snacks.

Pak Tai Temple: 
The Wan Chai Pak Tai Temple, built in 1783, is located on Lung On Street. Originally named Yuk Hui Kung, the temple was built by the locals and is dedicated to a martial deity Pak Tai. It houses a 10 foot long Pak Tai statue and is decorated with lotus lanterns.

Old Wan Chai Post Office: Situated on Queen’s Road East, this is the oldest surviving post office building in Hong Kong. It is an L-shaped building having attractive gable ends.
