History of Imphal

Imphal has a fascinating history dating back to 1st century AD. Manipur was originally a part of Burma; it became a part of India only in 1826 after Raja Jai Singh signed a treaty following a series of invasions in the territory. It was initially ruled by King Khaba and Pakhangba leaders but was taken over by the Ningthouja tribe. The tribe was politically powerful and excelled in warfare, it expanded its dominion to other parts of Manipur. King Khagemba and his son Khunjaoba built the renowned Kangla Palace. In 1891, the British decided to intervene to sort the invasions and attacks between the royal family of Manipur and the Burmese army. In 1892, the infamous Anglo-Manipur war broke out because the localities would not accept the autocratic rule. This also led to the demolition of Kangla Palace. Nevertheless, the British established its rule in Manipur until the independence of India. Manipur became a state in 1972 and Imphal was officially declared its capital.
