Nuruosmaniye Mosque

Nuruosmaniye Mosque, Istanbul Overview

Nuruosmaniye Mosque is an 18th century Ottoman Mosque located close to the Grand Bazaar in the Çemberlitaş neighbourhood, Fatih district. It derives its literal name “the light of Osman” from the 174 windows adorning the mosque's interiors. It boasts of prime Ottoman Baroque architecture and stands tall with the fourth largest dome in the city and unique minarets made up of bronze instead of the usual stone.

Commissioned by Mahmud I and completed under the reign of Sultan Osman II, the building complex also houses a madrasa, an imarat, a public fountain and a library. The complex is surrounded by numerous business centres and shops and is 2-minutes away from the Çemberlitaş rail station. There is no entry fee for visitors, but they must enter from a designated visitors’ gate only. With the verses of the Quran inscribed on the interiors of the mosque’s dome, it is one of the most common places of worship in Istanbul.
