Established by the Dutch government, Muara Angke Nature Reserve is a protected sanctuary for wildlife and vegetation. There are at least 30 different species of plants and several other types of animals, birds and insects. In this peaceful place, you will be embraced with the beauty of nature such as the lush green Mangrove trees and the constant chirping of the birds.
Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve was established by the Netherlands Indies government to preserve nature in the year 1939 and in recent times it covers an area of about 1300 ha. It is mostly visited by tourists, nature enthusiasts and students who look forward to spot the famous Bubut Jawa (a small black bird with orange wings, which is an endemic species and also quite rare).
The forest functions as the lungs of the city and a runoff area for floodwaters. A tour to the forest involves crossing bridges, vegetation and water bodies, which is quite adventurous. There is a guest house in the forest area and visitors can also enjoy boating on Angke River.
Muara Angke wildlife reserve is home to about 91 species of birds and a variety of mammals. Seventeen species of birds present here protected species and many are endemic birds like cerek java and bubut java which exist only on Java island. One can spot the Javanese Lathe and crane bluwok, which are two of the endangered species in the world.
Some commonly seen birds are small pecs, herons, ordinary parrot, eagles, sea screws and pied fantail. Other than birds, the Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve also has groups of long-tailed monkeys, small-clawed otters and various nocturnals. Reptiles like flowers snakes, rogue snakes, mangrove snakes, crocodiles and water lizards also found in the area.
The peaceful and lovely forest has pedada trees which provides home to colourful and chirpy birds. While walking across the forest tourists can enjoy the shades of the mangroves, pedada, nipah and explore the other 8 species of trees present in the forest. Muara Angke has 19 species of small and medium plants which add to the greenery of the forest.
