Prince Diponegoro Monument stands at Merdeka Square of Jakarta, built to honor the Javanese Prince Diponegoro for his bravery in the Java War. Constructed in 1965 by the Italian sculptor Colbertado, the equestrian statue depicts the Prince riding a horse in a heroic posture. The statue symbolises the struggle to gain country's freedom from the Dutch rule.
Prince Diponegoro strictly opposed the Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia. He played a crucial role in the Java War between 1825 and 1830. After the eventual defeat, Prince Diponegoro was captured and exiled to Makassar, where he died. However, his 5-year struggle against the Dutch served as an inspiration for the freedom fighters and has come to be celebrated by Indonesians over the years. He was regarded as a national hero and the Prince Diponegoro Monument was built in his honour.
