The Kalpitiya Dutch Fort was established between 1667 and 1676 by the then ruling forces of the Dutch in Sri Lanka. The almost square-shaped historic landmark, made of limestone and coral, was used for storing and shipping treasures back to the homeland. The fact that this fort was maintained by the Dutch for over 90 years, operated by the British military for over 60 years, and used as the Sri Lankan Navy base during the Sri Lankan Civil War may be why it attracts numerous history enthusiasts every year.
