Places to Visit in Kanyakumari

Vivekananda Rock Memorial: The magnificent Vivekananda Rock Memorial is located on a small island off Kanyakumari, with the picturesque Indian Ocean in its backdrop. This statue was built in the year 1970 on the island situated in Vavathurai, built on the site where Vivekananda attained enlightenment. The Rock Memorial is situated on one of the two adjacent rocks projecting out of the Lakshadweep Sea and comprises the 'Shripada Mandapam' and the 'Vivekananda Mandapam'.

Thiruvalluvar Statue: Dedicated to the accomplished philosopher and poet Thiruvalluvar, this monument stands tall at a mighty height of 133 feet and is perched upon a 38-foot pedestal. The pedestal's height represents the 38 chapters of virtue in Thirukkural. Thiruvalluvar was the author of a legendary work in the world of Literature, Tirukkural, the classic Tamil text. The premises of the statue also has a temple which is a quaint spot for meditation.

Sunset Point: Watching the sunset at the southernmost tip of India is a sight to behold. Kanyakumari is at the confluence of the Indian ocean, Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal. It's the only place in India where you can see both the sunrise and sunset at the same spot.

Gandhi Mandapam: It is a large memorial dedicated to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is located in the same spot where the urn of the ashes of this renowned individual was kept for the public to pay their homage. After the leader's death, his ashes were divided into 12 different urns and were scattered throughout the country for the general public to pay their last respect to this important figure. Kanyakumari was one of them. Inside the Gandhi Mandapam, visitors can witness a myriad of photographs of Gandhi, which were taken at different points in his life, and also his pictures with other famous personalities.

Kanyakumari Beach: Kanyakumari beach with its beautiful hue-changing beaches is the confluence of three water bodies: Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea. The water of three seas does not mix and you can distinguish between the turquoise blue, deep blue, and sea green waters of the three seas, though the colors keep changing with the season and the day's weather. The beach is not conducive to swim or surf as the sea is rough and the beach is rocky. To enjoy the best view, you can visit the Triveni Sangam point and climb up the famous lighthouse watchtower to entirely take in its beauty.

Rameshwaram: Located around 300km away, Rameshwara is included in almost every Kanyakumari Tour Package. According to Hindu mythology, Rameshwaram is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka. It has the first sea bridge connecting the town of Mandapam with Pamban Island, and Rameswaram. It is renowned for Ramanathaswamy Temple which houses the longest corridor in the world.

Madurai: One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of India, Madurai is the main entry and exit point included in many Kanyakumari tour packages. Madurai is known for the Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi with a sanctum for her consort, Sundareswarar. Ruled by Pandya kings for the longest time in its history, it is called the 'Lotus City' as it was planned and built in the shape of a lotus. With bustling bazaars and fantastic street food, Madurai has heritage walks conducted throughout the day.

Pratibha S's Trip to Kovalam, Kanyakumari, Varkala

(Written on 16 Nov, 2024)

What's Good: Resort and hotel suggestions to suit my budget and strategically selected closer to places of interest was truly 5 star service from the agent. My solo trip was made safe and comfo (Read More)rtable. Great suggestions were made to choose places to visit to make the trip fun, enjoyable and memorable. This awesome trip in a very long time was fun and refreshing. The paradise in Kerala will transcend your soul to haven. People are welcoming and friendly. I recommend Varkala tranquil beeches and Kovallam backwaters for the ultimate fun experience. Gods Own Country’s Kitchen is recommended for some great food and live music on the Varkala cliff point. If south temple architecture peeks your interest, then there are a few gems from ancient times hidden here to explore maintaining sanctity and faith in true form.
What's Not Good: Solo travellers pay couples rate which can be heavy on the purse. South India need to warm up to the idea that solo traveller numbers are increasing, male and female alike and in all age groups. Not only the cost of travel but people’s outlook need to change. Most of the temples here are only for believers in faith. Kanyakumari was crowded during the Diwali break. The seashore here is only to soak in the view. Thiruvananthapuram Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple darshan was divine however fleeting it maybe, but the mandapa which adorns the beautiful sculptures is out of bounds for devotees. The Garbhagudi could be well lit, so the devotees can properly catch a glimpse of the lord and be blessed. Since architecture is out of bounds recommend special entry for swift darshan.

Follow up by Marketer and the coordinator of itinerary was at the next level. Real time reply for each and every time. The hotels the provided were really very good. The driver for the car was also t (Read More)he best as we had an infant with us but our Driver Mr. Surya from Madurai served us the best, safe driver, non smoker, no addictions of Pan Masala, Gutkha or tobacco and non alcoholic. As the package includes all parking, bata, toll, hotel etc we need not bother our pocket again and again. I was shocked to see a driver who never demanded food, tea coffee or any tip till end We found Only one small problem i.e. the stay where they gave no doubt that the breakfast would have been good but we couldn't eat because they had VEG & NONVEG KITCHEN together.
