Shark Bay, Koh Tao Overview

The Shark Bay in Koh Tao is a unique and surreal spot popular for snorkeling and spotting the blacktip reef sharks that visit this beach regularly. The Shark Bay Koh Tao is a private bay glistening with white sand and shaded by tall coconut trees which are called ‘Thian’ by the locals. The local name for these trees gives the beach its original name- Thian Og, though the beach is more popularly referred to as by the name of Shark Bay.

The Shark Bay is famous not just for its sharks, but also for its serenity and beauty. Be on the lookout for the green turtles as well, which are extremely friendly. Those who don't want to pay for a private snorkel, can always spend a day in solitude at the beach, dipping in and out of the turquoise waters of the ocean at ease. There are some fancy restaurants scattered along the beachfront ideal for the relaxing trip to the beach.

Exploring the Shark Bay

There is a lot to explore on this stunning beach, and enjoying snorkeling is the best way to make the most the visit. Blacktip reef sharks visit the bay each day, and since the sharks are harmless, one doesn't need to worry about being bitten by them. However, make sure to give the shark ample space to move around while enjoying swimming around with them.

One might also be able to spot some green sea turtles at Shark Bay, so make sure to keep a sharp eye for them. In fact, this is the only place where one can still spot turtles every day. A few of these turtles are even longer than a meter, and they are not afraid of humans, so one can enjoy swimming and snorkeling in close proximity to these fantastic turtles.

The snorkelling gear can be rented from the Haad Tien Beach Resort, which is located very close by, or from the restaurant down at the beach.

Tips

  • Don't touch the green turtles since the bacteria on the human skin can greatly affect the health of the turtles, and even cause them great harm.
  • During December and January, small jellyfish can be found in abundance at the bay. Even though these jellyfish are harmless, if they sting repeatedly, one will have to get out of the water sooner than expected. So, it is best to steer clear of them.
