Kolsai Lakes National Park is one of Kazakhstan's most stunning natural reserves, renowned for its trio of lakes nestled in the northern Tien Shan mountains. These pristine lakes, known as Kolsai Lakes, are often referred to as the "Pearls of the Northern Tien Shan" and offer a striking landscape of deep blue waters, verdant forests, and towering mountain peaks.
The park’s natural beauty is defined by its three lakes: Lower Kolsai Lake (the easiest to access), Middle Kolsai Lake, and Upper Kolsai Lake. The first lake sits at an elevation of about 1,800 meters above sea level, surrounded by a dense forest of spruce trees, providing a serene and peaceful environment for visitors. A well-marked trail connects the three lakes, and while it’s possible to hike from the first to the third lake in one day, many opt to camp or spend the night in a guesthouse near the first lake to fully enjoy the park.
The lakes are glacial in origin, formed by natural damming from landslides, giving them their crystal-clear waters. Lower Kolsai Lake is accessible via just a few stairs and is perfect for kayaking, fishing, or simply enjoying a picnic by the shore. The upper lakes can be accessed via a 15 km trek. Beyond its lakes, Kolsai Lakes National Park is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, lynx, and even snow leopards in the higher altitudes. Birdwatchers will also delight in the variety of species found in the park, such as golden eagles and Himalayan griffons.
