Taman Negara, Kuantan Overview

Attractions & Activities at Taman Negara

For those who love outdoor activities, the dense rainforests form just the perfect background for it! There are a myriad of activities to choose from, which ensures that the visitors are literally spoilt for choice once they enter the premises.

Climb the Teresk Hill: There are two trails that leads to the 334-meter high hill. The boardwalk route along the east of the river is relatively easy to walk on, while the route to the west is somewhat tougher, and leads through muddy paths full of leeches. Those who are lucky enough are also able to spot a variety of wildlife while on the way up.

Enjoy a canopy walk on the Bukit Teresek: At a height of 530 meters, the suspension bridge in Malaysia is the longest in the world. The staff there is well trained to ensure that visitors walk safely on the bridge while they enjoy the sights of the flora and fauna en route.

Jungle trekking: Taman Negara offers treks of various lengths, which can last up to 9 days; and visitors are free to choose whatever suits them the best according to their previous trekking experience, expertise levels, etc.

Pay a visit to the Orang Asli settlements: The word Orang Asli translates to ‘original people’ in the Malay language, and there a lot of settlements that belong to these people along the trail. Be sure to take out the time to visit this settlement, which is easily accessible by boat; and enjoy the local lessons on shooting a blow gun and drinking the juice of local fruits.

Night Safaris: Visitors can opt for a night walking safari or a night 4WD Safari, and view sights of nocturnal plants and animals such as owls, leopard cats, water dragons, glow in the dark fungi, stick insects and other such creatures.

While at Taman Negara, also make sure to visit the Lata Berkoh and waterfall cascades. The waterfall is a popular spot for swimming, and the boat ride, for RM 160. On the way up, visit the Kelah Fish Sanctuary. The national park also plays videos on flora and fauna, which are shown at the Interpretive Room at 09:00 AM, 03:00 PM and 05:00 PM every day.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the park is between February and September, when it is the ongoing dry season. However, you will find most visitors here between April and August, which happens to be the tourist season. 

How to Reach Taman Negara

Bus: Board a bus from Kuala Lumpur and from other major towns and cities in Malaysia, but buses ply only till Jerantut, which is the nearest town to Taman Negara. Jerantut is connected to Taman Negara by jungle buses, which are operated by either of the two operators: Bas Latif or Pahang Lin Siong. However, there are only limited bus rides by these operators, and the journey easily takes over 1.5 hours.

Shuttle Services: These are the most convenient and easiest way to reach Taman Negara. In fact, these shuttle services not only include transportation by road, but are also inclusive of transport by boats, which is needed to travel from the Kuala Tembeling Jetty to Kuala Tahan Jetty in Taman Negara.
