It is believed that a ship sailing towards the Straits of Makassar was carrying food and rice toppled in the sea, spilling off all the carried food. It is said that with time, this white mound got transferred into the white sand of the island which always remains due to water on all sides. In the local Indonesian folklore, the word Beras means rice and Basah implies wet. Thus from here, the name of Pulau Beras Basah comes into existence in Malaysia.
