Loni sits right on the Delhi border, a busy NCR suburb on the banks of the Hindon River that's grown up around manufacturing and trade. Its quieter history survives in Loni Fort, an 18th-century structure built by the Rohilla chieftain Najib-ud-Daula, one of the few pre-colonial buildings left standing in this stretch of the capital region. The town's long-running brassware and utensil-making trade still hums away in workshops not far from the fort, a working link to an older Loni beneath the newer sprawl.

History of Loni

Most popularly known for its significance in mythology and history, it is a place where great rulers and essential figures from Hindu epics have spent their time. The name of the city derived from the historic legend King Lonnkaran who ruled this area and named his territory after his name. During the 12th century, Prithviraj Chauhan ruled the town. Even to this date, certain places of his fortification are significant places of visit in Loni. During the Mughal era, Zinat Mahal, the wife of Bahadur Shah Zafar built the three famous orchards. They are believed to be over 500 years old and are a major historical attraction in the city.
