Auberge de Castille, Malta Overview

The Auberge de Castille is an auberge situated in Castile Place, close to the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta. It is a Baroque inn from the 1740s that rests at the topmost point of Valletta, overlooking the Grand Harbour area and Floriana. It encompasses the Prime Minister’s office.

The Auberge de Castille was originally built in 1573 - 74 by the architect Girolamo Cassar in the Mannerist style for the knights of the Order of Saint John from the Langue of Castile, León, and Portugal. It was the most creative construction by Cassar, which was dismantled and replaced by a Spanish Baroque structure designed by architect Andrea Belli between 1741 to 1744 under the magistracy of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. During the siege of the French forces (1799–1800) and then the Second World War (1939–1945), the building was partially damaged and was repaired. Notably, Auberge de Castille was included on the Antiquities List of 1925 with the other auberges in Valletta city.
