Ggantija Temples, Malta Overview

Ggantija Temples are two well-preserved neolithic temples & a visitor center situated in Xaghra on Gozo island. Ggantija is among the oldest free-standing archaeological monuments over the globe. It is the first ancient Maltese structure listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ggantija Temples are one of the longest-standing monuments in the world that were built between 3600 and 3200 B.C. The site comprises two temples with separate entrances that are enclosed by a common boundary wall. These neolithic structures are made with locally sourced Coralline and Globigerina Limestone. The entrance of the Ġgantija Temples is through an Interpretation Centre that lets the visitors explore various aspects of Neolithic Period life and encompasses a collection of the most remarkable artifacts discovered at varied archaeological sites in Gozo. Notably, the word Ġgantija means 'Place of the giants', and it comes from the folktale that it was constructed by a giantess, acknowledging the massive dimensions of this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gozo.
