Upper Barrakka Gardens, Malta Overview

Upper Barrakka Gardens, located in Valletta, is a historic public garden offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. Originally built in the 16th century as a private retreat for the Knights of St. John, it now serves as a peaceful urban oasis. The gardens feature elegant archways, lush greenery, and historic monuments, including the Saluting Battery, where a ceremonial cannon firing takes place daily.

Upper Barrakka Gardens rests on the highest point of the city walls of eastern Valletta, where you can enjoy unparalleled views across the Grand Harbour & the low-lying areas of the city. Photography is a popular activity in this garden with a cafe. Besides, there are memorials of several notable people located in the gardens, including Sir Thomas Maitland, Sir Winston Churchill, and Gerald Strickland. Alongside these, a replica of Les Gavroches (the Street Boys) statue by the Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino is there. Also, the Upper Barrakka Lift is a remarkable attraction within the gardens, which connects the Grand Harbour to the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Valletta city center.
