Nguuni Nature Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary and park on the north coast of Mombasa near Nguu Tatu Hills. A 10-minute drive from Bamburi, it is home to diverse African wildlife and offers game drives where one can get glimpses of ostrich, giraffe, eland and oryx. It is popular for camping and has a designated picnic spot.
Bird lovers should take a walk along the walking trails to spot pink-backed pelicans, Egyptian geese and yellow-billed stork. Seasonal species are easier to catch if visited at the right time. For example, long-tail cormorant can be located in January and February, while fulvous whistling duck in July and August. Nguuni Nature Sanctuary has an Education Centre & Auditorium, which is home to Kenya’s first free children’s library with over 11,500 books. It is recommended to wear trousers and carry a mosquito repellant when walking through the wilderness.
