Muzaffarnagar Tourism

Muzaffarnagar is a municipal board in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh which is also the headquarter of the district. Located in the centre of the highly-fertile upper Ganga-Yamuna Doab region on the Delhi-Haridwar highway, Muzaffarnagar is one of the most prosperous cities of the state and forms a part of the New-Delhi Capital Region (Delhi-NCR). Mostly famous for its paper mills, sugar industry and steel rolling mills, Muzaffarnagar is dotted with some Mughal-era monuments and small temples.

Originally known as Sarwat, the city of Muzaffarnagar was gifted by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to one of his favourite chieftains Muzaffar Khan, leading to it being renamed as Muzaffarnagar. Being a centre of jaggery production with steel and sugar industries, there isn't much to explore in the city for the tourists. The major attractions of Muzaffarnagar are Ganeshdham, Vahelna Jain Temple and Bhairon Ka Mandir, apart from some smaller attractions scattered in the district. Khari Boli is the native language of Muzaffarnagar which resembles with the Haryanvi dialect of Hindi.

History of Muzaffarnagar

The history of this city, with the largest granary in the state, goes back to the reign of Shah Jahan. Muzaffarnagar was established by Sayyid Munawar Lashkar Ali, who named the city after his father, Sayyid Muzaffar Ali Khan in 1633. He was appointed as a ruler of this province by the then Mughal Emperor, Akbar.

It is said that the acclaimed war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, was fought in the fields of ‘Pachenda’. The base of their army camps is now famed as ‘Kaurawali’ and ‘ Pandavli’ respectively. However, after the descent of the Sayyids, the region of Muzaffarnagar was raided by Sikhs and other travellers. In 1826, Muzaffarnagar became a revenue district during the establishment of East India Company. Even after the Independence of India, this city endured the state of being harmonious.
