The foundation of the gothic basilica of Santa Chiara was first laid down in 1310 by the wish of King Robert of Anjou and his wife Sanica of Mallorca. The Franciscan Citadel was first built in two convents, one for the poor Clares and the other for Franciscan Friars Minors.
It took almost a decade to recover the remains of Santa Chiara's basilica and open it to the public. Now standing tall as a museum, it houses the remains of 1943, where one can see the treasures that survived the bombing, a traditional shepherd nativity scene from the 18th Century and a Roman thermal establishment from the 1st century AD.
